The Common Core Curriculum Office (CCCO) of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) opened the new exhibition "The Natural Art of Butterfly Wings ── Photography by Luk Man Kim" today (7 September). The exhibition showcases the photography by artist Mr Luk Man Kim, offering visitors an opportunity to experience how science and art converge in the wonders of the natural world and to embrace the mysteries of life with admiration and wonder.
The exhibition was officiated by representatives of HSUHK and the artist, including Mr Luk Man Kim, President of "Butterflies Universal Sharing" group and an insect photographer in Hong Kong; Professor Joshua Mok Ka Ho, President of HSUHK; Professor David Tse Kwai Che, Acting Provost and Vice-President (Academic and Research); Professor Jeanne Fu Ho Ying, Vice-President (Learning and Student Experience); Dr Wong Muk Yan, Director of Common Core Curriculum; and Dr Henry So Wai Lok, the Curator and Lecturer, the Common Core Curriculum Office.
Mr Luk Man Kim is an insect photographer in Hong Kong with a deep fascination for butterflies. His pursuit of the perfect shot has taken him into the heart of tropical rainforests in South America and Africa. Many of the precious photographs featured in this exhibition were captured during these journeys, while others were taken locally in Hong Kong.
Every butterfly wing is composed of millions of microscopic scales, aligned like fine brushstrokes to broadcast essential messages across ecosystems. The Curator Dr So tells the stories of butterflies in eight chapters, from visual defense mechanisms and optical wonders to the colors of courtship, exploring how nature paints for survival on the most delicate canvas on Earth.
