(Exhibition from 7 September to 8 October 2026)
A butterfly's wing is one of nature's most magnificent creations—an evolutionary masterpiece where living art meets pure survival. To the human eye, these delicate structures appear as intricate paintings; to the natural world, they are a vital language written in light, color, and form.
Every butterfly wing is composed of millions of microscopic scales, aligned like fine brushstrokes to broadcast essential messages across ecosystems. Intricate earth tones and disruptive patterns turn individuals into dry leaves and bark, mastering the fine art of invisibility. Elsewhere, high-contrast and vivid palettes act as bold warning signs, signaling toxicity to potential predators. In the realm of courtship, radiant hues and shimmering iridescent signals serve as visual beacons to secure mates and ensure the continuation of the species.
Behind every line, shade, and shimmering highlight lies millions of years of evolutionary adaptation, where biochemistry, structural optics, and natural selection seamlessly converge. Step inside and explore how nature paints for survival on the most delicate canvas on Earth.
This exhibition is supported by the University's Strategic Development Grant 2025/26. As an initiative of the STEAM Lab at HSUHK, the exhibition reveals the evolutionary secrets concealed within the elegance of butterfly wings, offering visitors an opportunity to experience how science and art converge in the wonders of the natural world. It is hoped that this exhibition will inspire visitors to see the world anew and to embrace the mysteries of life with admiration and wonder.
