The new exhibition "Tractions of Gravity" is about to be open till 20 November at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong – Foundation Gallery. Titled "Moving with Art. An Artistic Research Introduction", this public talk invites the exhibition's artists, Ruth Anderwald and Leonhard Grond, to introduce the field of artistic research, reflect on its origins and discuss its contemporary manifestations.
About the artists
Ruth Anderwald and Leonhard Grond are artists, artist-curators, and artist-researchers. They have exhibited internationally at artistic institutions including the Centre Pompidou, Paris, Himalayas Art Museum, Shanghai, and Tate Modern, London. They have curated exhibitions and programmes for Kunsthalle Wien, Whitechapel Gallery, London, Kunsthaus Graz, U-jazdowski Castle, Warsaw, and KINDL Centre for Contemporary Art, Berlin.
Since 2015, they have led art-science research projects focused on their long-term subject of dizziness, as well as EU-funded artistic research projects on anti-fascism with a range of partner organisations, including Museion Bolzano, the wannseeFORUM Foundation, HKW Berlin, Foundation Between Bridges, and HBK Braunschweig.
In 2025, they were guest professors of Artistic Research for the Doctor Artium programme at mdw University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. From 2021 to 2024, they were responsible for the PhD in Art programme as professors of Artistic Research at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Their most recent publication, Der Abgrund braucht, explores a new approach to formulating artistic research through a combination of narrative writing and essay.
